VA coverage to be terminated

Question:

My Father in law is 85, disabled, blind, deaf Korean War vet. We just found out the VA is going to terminate his coverage. This decision was made arbitrairly back in Sept. We were never notified and have just found out this week. The runaround the VA is giving his caregiver is horrendous. But we have to get this sorted and soon. Can you give me any advice so I can help him and his caregiver?

Jim's Reply:

I'm sorry but I don't know what sort of "coverage" we're talking about. The VA provides a wide range of benefits to disabled, older and lower income veterans with some benefits programs that cross over into other programs. I'll take a guess at it and the most likely benefit to be taken is that of a pension for lower income, totally disabled older vets. That benefit is "means tested" and if a veterans income and/or net worth rises above a certain amount, the benefit may disappear completely or by a significant amount. If the veteran disagrees with any decision by the VA, he is able to speak with a veterans law attorney and attempt to appeal.
