Va apportionment of benefits

Question:

I read your article on VA apportionment and I understand how it works. I'm a 100% disabled vet all combat/service connected and I use that money to survive. How do I fight this if it hasn't been settled yet?

Jim's Reply:

Paying your child support obligation is one handy trick. Your kids need that money to survive...VA awards you the money to care for yourself and your family, your kids are fam, right? You pay the court ordered obligation amount and then all discussion of apportionment goes away. Otherwise, you're engaged in a legal process that you may or may not win. Nobody is ever happy when the judgment isn't what they want but there's always a lesson to be learned. In this case, you can't dodge taking care of your children even if it means further sacrifice from you.
