Older vet receivings VA disability and Social Security

Question:

I'm writing for my Brother who is 70 yrs old, He is a Army veteran, 100% disabled. He is drawing VA Disability. He is on also on SSA but not getting SSA Disability. Is he able to draw SSA Disability?

Jim's Reply:

If your brother is getting his SSA retirement benefits, he's already getting his SSA disability payment. Prior to retirement if a citizen is found disabled by the SSA they are awarded SSDI...a benefit that pays them the amount they would be paid at full retirement. When the beneficiary reaches full retirement age the benefit converts from SSDI to the retirement benefit...with no fanfare and usually unnoticed by the beneficiary.
